Welcome to the African Chess Lounge (ACL)

At the African Chess Lounge (ACL), we believe that chess is more than just a game. It is a journey into the world of learning, strategy, and communication. Founded by Ruben Salimu, head coach of the South African Chess Federation, head coach of the Curro Durbanville school, and a certified international chess instructor, ACL serves as a beacon for all chess enthusiasts on the African continent.

Located in the heart of Cape Town, in the Durbanville area, our club is a cozy haven for players of all levels: from beginners just discovering the world of chess to seasoned masters honing their skills.

Through our renowned Chess Academy, we offer specialized chess training in Cape Town for individuals of all ages and abilities—whether individually, for teams, or for coaches.

Reuben Salimu is a nationally recognized chess leader, educator, and systems builder. He serves as National Head Coach of Chess South Africa and CEO of the African Chess Lounge, a Tier 2 FIDE Academy focused on developing scalable, high-impact chess programs across schools, communities, and elite pathways. With a strong foundation in leadership development, coach education, and high-performance systems, Reuben operates at the intersection of sport, education, and social impact. His work emphasizes structure, mentorship, and long-term sustainability, building clear pathways from grassroots participation to international representation. Reuben is known for designing national coaching frameworks, certification systems, and tournament structures that reduce financial barriers while raising competitive standards. His vision positions chess not only as a competitive sport, but as a tool for discipline, critical thinking, and nation-building.

Where is the African Chess Lounge located?

The club is located in Durbanville (Cape Town, South Africa) at the Curro Durbanville Primary School: 1 Memento Drive, Durbanville, Cape Town, Western Cape 7550.

When do club meetings take place?

Club meetings take place every Saturday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Curro Durbanville Primary School.

Is the club suitable for beginners?

Yes. The African Chess Lounge is open to all skill levels: from beginners to tournament players. You can just come and start playing.

What usually happens at a club meeting?

Usually, these are casual games, blitz, and rapid, game analysis, practice, and communication. You can come alone—we'll find an opponent.

How much does it cost to join the club?

Options: Monthly — R100, 6 Months — R500, Annual — R900. Please check with the organizers for participation details.

What training programs are available?

There are individual 1-on-1 sessions, group training, a High Performance program, and masterclasses.

How much does individual training cost?

Example of a 1-on-1 package: R2,050 per month (4 sessions of 1 hour each). Suitable for rapid growth and a personalized plan.

Do you hold tournaments?

Yes, tournaments and events are held, including club sessions and competitions of various formats.

Can chess equipment be purchased?

Yes, there is a store: chess sets, boards, clocks, books, and other equipment.
